Alton Castle stands high on the hill on the opposite side of the Churnet Valley to the more famous Alton Towers. The original castle dates from the 12th century but the Gothic building visible here was built in 1847 to the design of the Victorian architect Augustus Pugin for the Earl of Shrewsbury, The building is now used as a Catholic Youth Retreat Centre.

  1. A great edifice and well processed. You show much more restraint than I can ever manage.

  2. Each to his own, Adrian. I tend to use HDR very rarely and only to bring out a bit more detail. Sometimes I go for the dramatic effect though, particularly if I'm after an interesting sky!

  3. I once saw a 'perambulation theatre company' - a group of actors that uses the landscape as its backdrop, and which the audience has to follow about from scene to scene - in Buxton. They used this tower for the final scene of their play 'Gawain & The Green Knight' just as light was falling; it was breathtaking.
However, I can't remember the name of the company. I hope they are still going.
