The Monsal Trail

Chee Tor Tunnels on the Monsal Trail
The Monsal Trail is a mixed use cycle and walking trail that goes from Bakewell to Blackwell Mill near Buxton. Recently, the tunnels on the trail have been opened and it is now possible to complete the journey following the track of the Midland Railway line, closed in the 1960s.

The longer tunnels are lit until dusk. This was once a very important line linking London and Manchester. The last train to use the line ran in 1968.

  1. Nice photographs... I haven't had chance to visit the newly opened tunnels, but it will soon be the school holidays so I'll have plenty of time to do so then!

  2. This is somewhere I must visit. I used to walk the Millers dale station section most mornings when I lived in Tideswell. The last image is very good.

  3. The trail is now quite busy with cyclists, even on a Monday (when I was there). There are still plans for Peak Rail to re-lay and reopen the line from Matlock through to Buxton. So far they have reached Rowsley but need funds to build a new bridge over the A6!
