Pilsbury Castle

Pilsbury Castle
Pilsbury Castle in the upper valley of the River Dove is the remains of an 11th century Motte and Bailey fort. The fort was built by the Normans to enforce their rule on this part of Northern England. It commands the main route north-south through the Dove valley. The limestone rock in the photo was incorporated into the fortifications. The remains of the main mound (the Motte) is evident at the site as are the remains of the two enclosures (Baileys). Chrome Hill in the background echoes the shape of the rock.

I love to see other people's photos of our fantastic local countryside so I'm very glad to have found your blog and really enjoying seeing where you have been! I wish I was able to get out and about as often as you seem to!

  2. Thanks for the nice comments Louise. I've just looked at your blog entry and I followed almost the same route in reverse, but I climbed up to Sheen. You have some nice photos there. Interestingly, I was thinking today on my walk that I should take photos as a record of the route I follow and post those - just as you did!
Retirement helps a lot with opportunities to get out. I recommend it!

  3. Yes, How I wish I could retire but I have a long, long way to go!

I always blog my whole walk, sometimes I perhaps put in too many photos, but I think it's nice to see various snaps of the journey!
